A Coincidence? Only God

“He is our great light, our true hope.”

—Isaiah 9:2

While reading Nancy Clancy aloud at the tutoring club, my third grade student paused to tell me that she was worried. Her teacher was going to be out the rest of the year because she was having brain surgery. Her class would have a substitute teacher.

Wanting to offer comfort, I said, “Oh, I know a teacher at my old school and she had brain surgery. Now she’s doing really great. Let’s hope the best for your teacher.”

After tutoring I stopped at my neighborhood market. Who do I see? That very teacher I used to work with! After our hug in the produce aisle, Mrs. K said she is back at campus teaching full-time after recovering from brain surgery. I told her about my third grade pupil who was worried about her own teacher who was facing the same challenge. I encouraged her with the news of Mrs. K’s recovery. A coincidence? It gets better. My fellow teacher said she went to the same school where I tutor, grades K-8! Mrs. K said to tell my student that she is feeling so much better.

Mrs. K is one of the star teachers at my old school. I’m thrilled she’s back teaching and doing well. Our encounter at the grocery store was a wonderful, only God moment.

I’ve been looking for and finding more of these “only God” blessings this year. In January, as a spiritual resolution, I began inviting God to show up in my day. I start with a simple request: “Lord, show me your love today. Give me the eyes to see it.” He is my light and hope. I watch throughout the day, waiting for a purpose-filled interaction. It gives me a sense of expectancy, wondering what God will do. It may be big or it may be small. Watch what happens when you pray!

Lord, I want to be more aware of You at work in my life. Be present in my day. Please bless me. Holy Spirit, show me a glimpse of the supernatural. You are my great light. I will watch and wait for You to manifest as my True Hope.
